Ethnic Knitting Exploration

by Donna Druchunas

publication date: April 2009

Ethnic Knitting Exploration, the second book in the Ethnic Knitting series, takes off for Lithuania, Iceland, and Ireland in another voyage of knitting discovery.  This time, you’ll get a tour through unusual color patterns from Lithuania, circular yokes from Iceland, and Irish Aran-style garments.  Step-by-step tutorials introduce the traditional techniques of each region, followed by a small project—fingerless gloves, a capelet, or a poncho.  These are a great place to experiment with ideas, or just practice the new techniques before moving on to one of the two master sweater plans.  Each project is presented as detailed instructions, a visual plan, and a spreadsheet, so you’re sure to find something you’re comfortable working with.

This installment introduces more complicated structures than Ethnic Knitting Discovery, including raglan, yoke, and saddle-shoulder sweaters, and a supplementary chapter shows three ways to turn a pullover sweater pattern into one for a cardigan.  Like the best cookbooks, Ethnic Knitting Exploration doesn’t aim to give you just one project and then sit on the shelf—its mix of traditional techniques and contemporary style is designed to inspire you and stretch your skills, so you have more control and confidence knitting with or without a pattern.

Ethnic Knittign Discovery

Ethnic Knitting Discovery

by Donna Druchunas

Ethnic Knitting Discovery visits the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and the Andes in a whirlwind tour of traditional knitting techniques.  At each stop, you’ll learn a bit about the region’s knitting history, and the key techniques that make the craft unique.

You can practice these new skills on one of the small introductory projects (a scarf, cape, bag, or headband) before embarking on one of the drop-shoulder pullover designs, which you can personalize for infinite possibilities. Rather than giving you a pattern to follow, Ethnic Knitting Discovery gives you a recipe to tailor to yourself—or a deserving recipient—using whatever yarn has caught your fancy, in whatever size you want.

Each project is presented for beginning, intermediate, and experienced knitters.  Whether you’ve recently taken up knitting and want to stretch your skills, or you’ve knitted for years and want something interesting and different, you’re sure to find plenty to keep you busy!

Arctic Lace

by Donna Druchunas

The approximately 250 Native Alaskan members of the Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers’ Co-operative harvest the ultra-fine, ultra-soft underdown of musk-oxen, known as qiviut, and use the resulting yarn to knit lace garments whose designs are inspired by traditional designs and culture. Author Donna Druchunas has traveled to Alaska and brought back her experiences with these knitters and their wonderful textiles.

Arctic Lace combines good reading, a beginner's lace-knitting tutorial, and an array of original knitting patterns that make the most of qiviut or any special yarn.

Spinning in the Old Way

by Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts

Ask anyone who has had the good fortune to study with her: Priscilla Gibson-Roberts is one of the masters of hand spinning and knitting. Although she rarely teaches workshops any more, she continues to share her warmth and wisdom in print.

Spinning in the Old Way is a wonderful introduction to spinning that distills Priscilla's personal approach to the craft and some of her favorite tools. It presents a simple, easy-to-master skill-set that requires only four tools to create your own yarn: a high-whorl (or other) spindle, a yard of commercial or other ready-made yarn, fiber, and practice.

This is a perfect book for knitting enthusiasts who are interested in creating their own yarn, but do not necessarily want to dedicate space or money to a spinning wheel. Spinning in the Old Way teaches you to create beautiful yarn without either complication.

"[A] must-have for spindlers, new and old . . . " Nake-id Knits

Note to owners of Priscilla Gibson-Roberts’ previously published book, High Whorling: While Spinning in the Old Way is neither a reissue nor a new edition of High Whorling, the essential content is similar. The text has been completely reworked, and all the illustrations are new. Owners of High Whorling may want to check out Spinning in the Old Way from their local libraries before deciding whether to purchase this book.

Knitting in the Old Way

by Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts & Deborah Robson

“Reading this wonderful book is like taking a master class with two of the most knowledgeable, gifted, and generous teachers in the modern knitting community.”
—Melanie Falick, author of Weekend Knitting, Kids Knitting, and Knitting in America; co-author of Knitting for Baby

Originally published in 1985 in a significantly smaller edition with less information, Knitting in the Old Way presents a way of knitting rather than a finite set of patterns. It empowers today’s knitters to produce both everyday and heirloom-quality sweaters without relying on line-by-line patterns. It teaches us to read the fabric on our needles instead of the fine print. The hardcover edition of the book is bound with sewn signatures (for durability and to open flat) and has a sturdy, paper-over-boards cover.

bullet “Knitting in the old way” means knitting by thinking, not by following.

bullet Knitting in the Old Way guides you to discover a way of knitting. It unfolds a process that connects you to centuries of textile wisdom and helps you invent and create designs of your own.

bullet “Knitting in the old way” involves working each sweater from a plan based on proportions, instead of from a line-by-line pattern.

Simple Socks, Plain and Fancy

Simple Socks, Plain & Fancy

by Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts

Priscilla Gibson-Roberts, one of the masters of historic and contemporary sock knitting featured in Vogue Knitting and Interweave Knits and in Ethnic Socks and Stockings, presents her all-time favorite sock-knitting techniques.

Many knitters are now familiar with the short-row shaping technique for heels and toes, which is the book’s core concept.* Most have not yet fully explored the versatile methods of color patterning, including ways to work intarsia in the round, Priscilla’s tips for making custom-fitted socks, or her chapter on adapting these ideas to the knitting of mittens.

Simple Socks captures the best of Priscilla’s discoveries about sock-knitting. It’s a master class, or a lifetime of sock discovery, in a compact package—a doorway to gazillions of magical socks, waiting to emerge from your needles.

* The short-row technique has subsequently been presented incorrectly in some other publications. If you've tried short-row heels or toes and ended up with holes or disorderly joins, you've likely been working from one of those sources.

Simple Socks, Plain and Fancy is recommended for any knitter who finds traditional knitting patterns too confining, to anyone who wants to design socks, and most of all, to anyone who wants to simplify—and enjoy—the entire process of knitting socks.”

Knitting Cowichan Sweaters (working title)

by Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts
planned release date: in the hazy future —we’re working as fast as we can!

A truly unique North American knitting tradition developed among the Salish people of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Their bulky-knit, natural-colored sweaters display dramatic designs and many innovative construction techniques. Learn how to apply new ideas to your own knitting, how to appreciate the “real thing” in a particular folk tradition, how to recognize mass-produced designs, and what we all lose when the market requires faster, watered-down production. We’ll bet you’ll end up loving your own knitting more—and wanting an authentic Cowichan sweater, too! The original edition of this book was published in 1989 as Salish Indian Sweaters. The new version will contain more patterns and will look at what’s happening with current design trends.
